Durban shack fire leaves scores homeless

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Two children and their parents are fighting for their lives at a Durban hospital after they were injured when their shack burnt down at Forman informal settlement near Springfield in Durban.

About 2000 shacks were burnt down from a fire believed to have started from a candle that was left burning at night.

Leader of Abahlali Basemjondolo, Sbu Zikode, says over 4000 people have been left homeless.

“As we speak they are fighting for their lives at the hospital, so we hope eThekwini municipality and other organisations that are working to support communities including NGOs and churches will be able to support this community in this difficult time, knowing that they have lost all of their belongings,” says Zikode.
