The Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says he will undertake an investigation into the root cause problems at the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

NSFAS was placed under administration last August after it experienced serious deficiencies in its systems, business processes and capacity to disburse funds.

Nzimande says he will appoint a specialist ministerial task team over the next few months to undertake a full assessment and investigation of what led to the problems.

“Let’s just go in and do in a full blown investigation – there are other factors that we may add into looking into this [problems at NSFAS]. For instance we might want that ministerial task team to also reflect on, the changes or improvements in terms of the pass rates for instances…”
