South Africa’s (SA) Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officially launched the 2019 National and Provincial Elections on Thursday, with an innovative communication and education campaign aimed at encouraging SA’s youth to register and vote.

Elections are expected to take place in May, President Cyril Ramaphosa is yet to officially make a statement on the official date.

Only 16% aged 18-19 are registered to vote according to the IEC.

CEO of the Independent Electoral Commission Mr Sy Mamabolo says that preparations for the elections started 18-months ago.

“The critical input event is the registration which ends on the 26th and 27th. So it allows us to finalise the voters’ roll, as you know the different elements of any election process. So,we want to ask South Africans to do a few things, firstly those that are registered need to confirm the correctness of their addresses.” This can be done on the IEC’s website or at your voting stations before January 27.
