Councillors to visit Hoërskool Overvaal next week

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A team of counsellors will again visit Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging in the Vaal next week to provide further counselling to learners.

It’s emerged that many are traumatised as a result of the protests which started last week outside their school.

Some of the protests have turned violent, with a police van being torched in the process.

Over 40 protesters have been arrested. On Thursday, learning had to be suspended after more protests were held.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has warned that it will intensify its action next week.

The protests were sparked by the ruling of the High Court in Pretoria that the Afrikaans medium school did not have the capacity to accommodate 55 English-speaking pupils.

New Found Generation Director Pierre Ronquest says: “We have not done in-depth counselling with scholars, but we will do it next week. We are going to come to the school with a whole team, and if there are more kids that went through trauma – we will be on site.”
