ANC, Cosatu and Sadtu to march to Hoërskool Overvaal

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), together with teachers’ union South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) and the African National Congress (ANC) are expected to lead a march to Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging, south of Johannesburg, on Thursday morning.

The school has been the scene of on-going protests since last week after the Gauteng Department of Education lost a court case against it just before schools re-opened for the 2018 academic year.

The High Court ruled that the Afrikaans-medium school does not have to accommodate 55 English-speaking pupils.

There is a heavy police presence at the school on Thursday morning after more than 40 people arrested for public violence since the protests began last week.

On Monday, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga visited the school and condemned the protests. She said the violent demonstrations were violating the pupils’ right to education and called for them to stop.

Cosatu said the aim of their protest on Thursday is to hand over memorandum of demands to the school and its district offices.

The school also decided to close its doors for Thursday and reopen when the protest action calms down.

Last week the ANC and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) staged a protest outside the school.
