Cosatu supports Shoprite Checkers strike

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Congress of SA Trade Union (Cosatu) says it fully supports the planned one-day nationwide strike by more than 30 000 members of trade union SACCAWU working for Shoprite Checkers on Friday.

The workers will demand an immediate reversal of the unilateral changes to working hours, including the reinstatement of Sandton Checker’s employees who were subsequently dismissed for protesting against these changes.

They’re also demanding the provision and payment of safe transport for workers who work night shifts.

Cosatu spokesperson Sizwe Pamla has called on all South Africans to be in solidarity with the Shoprite staff.

He says: “We can not afford to celebrate our festive season while at the same time the people who are serving us in most of these retailers are treated incorrectly.”
