West Indies women’s cricket team win second ODI against South Africa in Super Over

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The West Indies women’s cricket team won the second One Day International (ODI) match against South Africa in a Super Over at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. The Windies smashed 25 runs, batting first after both teams finished tied on 160 all out. In reply the Proteas only managed 17 for one – handing the visitors a hard fought win and a one-nil series lead.

About two hours of play was lost to the Highveld rains this morning. And the match was reduced to 41 overs, when play did get under way around midday. Struggling to get the ball away on a somewhat sluggish wicket – Proteas openers made a circumspect start after losing the toss and being invited to bat first.

Laura Wolvaardt and Tasmin Brits put on a 53-run opening stand in the first 16 overs before the pair were dismissed in quick succession. Captain Sune Luus was the only other batter who made a significant contribution.

Sharing in a 33-run partnership with Mignon du Preez and a 29-run partnership with Chloe Tryon – Luus played an aggressive innings. When she departed for a much needed 46 – with the score on 120 for five – the innings unravelled with haste for South Africa’s women.

The last five batters added just 40 more runs to their total as the Windies bowling attack shared the spoils. They took two wickets a piece – to help bundle the Proteas out for a disappointing 160, inside the 41 overs.

Despite setting such a well-below par target, South Africa’s bowlers led by seamer Ayabonga Khaka were up for the challenge. Khaka helped to dismantle the West Indian top order – taking three scalps – including that of centurion in the opening match Deandra Dottin, reducing the visitors to 49 for four in the 11th over. Windies skipper Stafanie Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle led their side out of danger – with a 33-run fifth wicket partnership.

It was leg-spin of the Proteas captain Luus who eventually broke through – accounting for her counterpart – caught and bowled for 21. Luus struck again in the same over, removing Campbelle for 13, leaving the tourists on 83 for six – still needing 78 runs to win. Chedean Nation and Chinelle Henry were forced to rebuild.

They put on 54 runs for the seventh wicket – threatening to take the game away from the Proteas. Khaka however had other ideas. She again turned the tide taking two wickets in consecutive deliveries – for her first five-wicket haul in One Day cricket – finishing with five for 26.

Masabata Klaas accounted for Nation for 35 and Shabnum Ishmail did the unexpected taking the final wicket with the scores tied to force a Super Over. Batting first the tourists guided by Dottin clubbed a massive 25 runs from the over.

Tryon and Brits only managed 17 run for one in their reply – gifting the Windies victory. The next match is a day/night game at the same venue, starting at 2pm on Thursday afternoon.
