Weapons smuggler – bail plea continues

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The state is expected to argue its case on Thursday when the bail application of convicted Dutch weapons smuggler, Guus Kouwenhoven resumes in the Cape Town Magitsratre’s Court.

His lawyers say his arrest in the Mother City last week was premature.

The 75-year old was convicted and sentenced in absentia in a Dutch court to 19 years in prison for his involvement in war crimes of former Liberian president Charles Taylor.

The court found that he smuggled weapons for Taylor’s regime.

The defence says an appeal on the matter is underway in the Netherlands.

Instructing attorney Gary Eisenberg says his client is not a flight risk.

He says after his provisional arrest the dutch authorities have to make available the full exradition request. As a compliant bundle it has to comply with South African law within 40 days of the provisonal arrest.

“A lot of time has moved on. Apparently South Africa received an extradition request months and months ago and was sent back for being non compliant.”

“All of a sudden quick action is taken after he files an appeal in Holland, why?” questions Eisenberg.
