Delegates at the Democratic Alliance’s  (DA) seventh Federal Congress in Pretoria have started voting for new leaders.  The results are expected to be announced around midday on Sunday.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane was nominated unopposed while current Federal chairperson Athol Trollip, Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga and the party’s Free State chairperson Annelie Lotriet are contesting the position of federal chairperson.

The DA adopted a number of resolutions on Saturday, it’s first day of the Federal Congress.

Resolution included allowing job-seekers to opt out of the minimum wage by settling for a lesser salary.

James Selfe, the DA’s Federal Executive chairperson, says, “Nine and a half million South Africans are unemployed at the moment, under the age of 30. Those people are desperate for any job. Getting paid something is better than getting paid nothing at all and it’s for that reason that we suggest that if somebody wants to opt out, with the full knowledge that they might get paid less than the minimum wage, they should be allowed to do that.”
