Reading Time: < 1 minute

A possible pipe bomb explosion at a busy transport hub in New York City has led to mass evacuations and left only one person, thought to be carrying the bomb, injured.

The suspect, who local media report originally came from Bangladesh, and had lived in the United States for seven years, was severely injured when the device exploded while he was carrying it.

The explosive detonated in a passageway underneath the Port Authority, one of the busiest bus transportation hubs in Manhattan, just blocks away from Times Square.

Law enforcement revealed that the suspect had been wearing an explosive device strapped to his body and that police had stripped him of his clothes to remove it.

The explosion was captured on surveillance video and sent hundreds of commuters running to evacuate as hundreds of law enforcement and emergency personnel rushed to the scene.

No visible effects from the explosion could be seen from outside the building as the detonation occurred underground.

No other injuries except that of the suspect were reported. The male, thought to be in his 20s, is expected to survive.
