Anti-apartheid activist Solomon Mahlangu has been conferred an Honorary Doctoral Degree by the University of South Africa (Unisa).

Mahlangu received the Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science degree at a graduation ceremony at the university in Pretoria.

He was hanged in April 1979 after he was sentenced to death by the apartheid regime.

Mahlangu was found guilty of two counts of murder and three charges under the Terrorism Act.

He was part of a group of 10 who had entered South Africa with weapons and ammunition following their training at an Umkonto we Sizwe Training Camp.

The degree was accepted by his brother, Chief Lucas Mahlangu.

“On behalf of the Mahlangu family, we really appreciate and thank every peace-loving South Africans for showing us as the family that they do care and appreciate what Solly did for the country when he gave his life for the liberation of this country.”

His brother says the struggle is not over and urged all South Africans to fight for change.

“People, keep on fighting. As Solly said, we must keep on fighting. Fight for better education, fight for a better future of this country. Fight for unity, fight for GBV, fight for corruption. Let us hold hands and rebuild this country of South Africa.”

A street in Pretoria has been named after the Mamelodi-born freedom fighter, as well as a stadium.

In Tanzania, an educational institution by exiled African National Congress (ANC) members was also named after Mahlangu.

Acting Unisa Vice Chancellor, Professor Solomon Magano, says they are happy to be part of honouring Mahlangu.

“As a university, we are truly delighted to associate with the Mahlangu family. We also thank you for the reminder that the struggle is not over. Aluta continua. The struggle is now waged against corruption, GBV and many other ailments.”
