The University of Cape Town (UCT) is expected to open its newly renovated Khayelitsha Cervical Cancer Screening Project site ahead of National Women’s Day.

The project, which was initiated in collaboration with Columbia University in New York, first opened its doors in 1995 and provides cervical cancer prevention services to women where health care resources are limited.

Project director and head of UCT’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Professor Lynette Denny, says cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women globally.

She says in South Africa, there are about 10 000 diagnoses every year.
