Top SA cardiologist, Bongani Mayosi dies

The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town (UCT), Professor Bongani Mayosi has died. He was 51-year-old.

Mayosi was a cardiology professor who was awarded the county’s highest honour, the Order of Mapungubwe in 2009.

UCT says in a statement they are in touch with Professor Mayosi’s family, and are appreciative of all messages of support and condolences.

University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng says, “The family will liaise with the University for further communication at the appropriate time.”

The family has requested that its privacy be respected during this difficult time.

Mayosi was an A-rated National Research Foundation researcher. His research interests included rheumatic fever, tuberculosis pericarditis and cardiomyopathy.

Mayosi was a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and a former President of the College of Physicians of South Africa.
