Struggles of the working class need to be addressed: Vavi

The General-Secretary of the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu), Zwelinzima Vavi, says some members of the union’s leadership are seeking to divert attention away from the real issues that it is facing.

He says the struggles of the working class need to be addressed.

Vavi has been given a notice of intent to place him on precautionary suspension for the alleged breach of the labour federation’s policies.

Saftu President Mac Chavalala says the move is not politically motivated.

Several unions affiliated to SAFTU have voiced their opposition to the intention to suspend him.

Vavi says, “It is regrettable that we are having this debate. We have been diverted from the real struggles of the working class which must require a broader response of unity in action, but unity based on principle. The idea now that we have been forced to discuss money spent on airtime to facilitate the executive committee is simply ridiculous and seeks to divert attention away from the real issues that perhaps the federation is facing at this particular moment,” says Vavi.

Vavi rejects SAFTU plans to place him on suspension:
