South Africans urged to use proper channels when travelling

The Department of International Relations (Dirco) has urged South Africans to go through appropriate channels when planning to work overseas.

This comes after a group of around 50 South Africans were left stranded in China after being recruited to teach English.

The group had been given student visas by the agent, instead of working visas.

Their passports were confiscated by Chinese authorities but were returned after the SA government intervened.

The first group arrived back in Johannesburg early on Monday morning.

Dirco Spokesperson, Ndivhuwo Mabaya says the rest will arrive during the course of the week.

He says they will be assisted in getting their documents in order.

“We want these young people to sort out their paperwork, and go back to China to teach. We are arranging with the Chinese Embassy to see them as soon as possible, so they can apply through the embassy – and for them to go back and teach. The world is opening up for South Africans, and as the world is coming to South Africa, young South Africans must also go to the world,” says Mabaya.
