South Africans nabbed in China over ‘visa irregularities’

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Two of the fifty-one South Africans who travelled to China to teach English have been arrested. The two allegedly worked closely with the agent, known as Mr Wong before the group travelled to China.

The group had their passports confiscated by Chinese authorities when it was discovered that they did not comply with Chinese laws.

Department of International Relations  (Dirco) pokesperson, Ndivhuwo Mabaya says all the South Africans who were affected, with the exception of those arrested, will be home on different flights by the end of the week.

“By Friday we are expecting 49. Our consulate in China is doing whatever they can to ensure that we understand the charges, we understand how we can assist, and how we can get them home as soon as possible. There is nothing much we can do when you are arrested in another country – because you need to go through the necessary systems of that country.”
