South Africans outside of the country wishing to vote in the upcoming general elections on May 8 have just one week left to apply to vote abroad.

According to a statement by the Electoral Commission, registered voters have until March 13 to apply and notify the Chief Electoral Officer of their intention to vote at one of South Africa’s 121 foreign missions.

Registered voters can apply by completing a form on the electoral commissions website.

Applications are open to both those voters registered abroad as well as locally registered voters who will be travelling outside of the country during the election and wish to vote outside of the country.

Voting outside of the country is scheduled for Saturday April 27, 2019 at South Africa’s foreign missions.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo says: “The applications relate to persons who wish to vote outside of South Africa, they need to notify the IEC of their intended absence and the place outside of SA where they intend to vote.”

“If they are registered, their application will be approved and during special voting they will be able to cast a ballot outside of South Africa.”
