Sitting of sixth Parliament set for May 22

National Assembly
Reading Time: < 1 minute

May 22 has been set as the provisional date for the first sitting of the National Assembly. The day was chosen after consultation between the office of the Chief Justice and Parliament.

While the date is yet to be declared by the Chief Justice, by law the two Houses of Parliament have to be established within 14 days of the election results announcement.

Parliament will then ensure there’s a government with an election of a President.

The Chief Justice will preside over the first sitting, that’s when all National Assemblies members will be sworn in, with National Council of Provinces (NCOP) MPs expected to be sworn in on May 23.

The inauguration will be held on May 25. And the first joint sitting of both Houses of sixth Parliament is expected in June.
