Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says the South African Revenue Service (SARS) has collected R1 249 trillion in the 2020-2021 financial year.

In the SARS annual report tabled in Parliament, the Finance Minister says this is R37.5 billion more than estimated.

Godongwana says despite having had a very challenging year, the revenue service worked hard to maintain fiscal capability and sovereignty that has been achieved over the past 27 years.

SARS briefing on preliminary outcomes of revenue collected:

He says SARS also tracked revenue collected from its direct compliance activity of R171 billion against the target of R93 billion.

This, he says, represents an over-achievement of R78 billion.

However, Godongwana says low compliance behaviour remains a concern which will require more focus.
