SA records 4 966 new COVID-19 cases, 46 new deaths

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa have increased by 4 966 to 92 681. South Africa has now recorded a total of 1 877 COVID-19 related deaths.

The country has a 2% COVID-19 mortality rate.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has sent his condolences to the friends and loved ones of those who have lost their lives to the novel virus.

“Regrettably, we report a further 46 COVID-19 related deaths: 11 from Eastern Cape, three from KwaZulu-Natal and 32 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 1 877. We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased,” Dr Mkhize says.

The Western Cape remains the province with the most confirmed cases of COVID-19, accounting for 54.1% of the country’s total, having recorded 50 173 infections. The province has also recorded the most deaths, accounting for 1 392 of total fatalities in South Africa.

It is followed by Gauteng with 18 978 cases, accounting for 20.5% of South Africa’s total infections. The province also accounts for 114 of the country’s COVID-19 related deaths.

Dr Mkhize says 49 confirmed cases remain unaccounted for.

The 60-69 age group has recorded the most deaths, accounting for 493 (26.3%) of total fatalities, followed closely by the 50-59 age group which has recorded 459 (24.4%) deaths.

Only three children aged between 0-9 years have died from the disease.

Males account for 52% of total deaths, while females account for 47.9%. The gender of two (0.1%) people is unknown.

A total of 1 293 608 tests have been conducted in the country so far, 33 174 of them conducted in the last 24-hour cycle.

South Africa has recorded 50 326 recoveries, which translates to a recovery rate of 54.3%. Currently, the country has 42 326 active cases.
