SA records 2 364 new COVID-19 cases, 126 new deaths

South Africa has recorded 2 364 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country’s total confirmed cases to 690 896. Gauteng accounts for most of the country’s cases provincially with 222 745 (32.2%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 120 295 (17.4%).

The country has also recorded 126 new COVID-19 related fatalities, bringing the total number of deaths to 17 673.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Eastern Cape. The province recorded 39 of the 126 COVID-19 related deaths.

“Regrettably, we report 126 more COVID-19 related deaths: 39 from Eastern Cape, 35 from the Free State, ten from KwaZulu Natal, 30 from Gauteng, four from Mpumalanga and eight from Western Cape. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 17 673. Of the 126 deaths reported today, 11 occurred in the past 24 hours: two in the Free State, one in Gauteng, four in KwaZulu-Natal and four from Mpumalanga. The provinces continue to refine their processes of identifying COVID-19 related deaths as outlined in the statement of 8 October 2020. We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers that treated the deceased patients,” says Dr Mkhize.

Gauteng has recorded the most deaths provincially with 4 444 COVID-19 related deaths, followed by the Western Cape with 4 252 deaths.

Tests and recoveries

A total number of 4 388 171 tests have been conducted to date in the country, with 28 066 new tests conducted in the last 24-hour cycle.

The private sector accounts for 2 499 113 (57%) of the country’s total tests while the public sector accounts for 1 889 058 (43%) tests.

622 153 people have recovered from the virus, bringing the country’s recovery rate to 90%.
