SA records 2 270 new COVID-19 cases, 58 deaths

South Africa has recorded 2 270 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the national total of infections to 767 679. Gauteng still has the most infections provincially, accounting for 30.4% (233 036) of total cases, while the Northern Cape has recorded the least cases – accounting for 3% (22 952) of total cases.

Fifty-eight new deaths have been recorded. Most of the fatalities are from the Eastern Cape, which has recorded 28 deaths.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says a total of 20 903 deaths have now been recorded in South Africa.

“Regrettably, 58 deaths have been reported: Eastern Cape 28, Free State 13, Gauteng eight and Western Cape nine. This brings the total to 20 903 deaths,” Mkhize says.

While Gauteng recorded the least number of deaths among the four provinces on Sunday, it still accounts for the most deaths nationally. The province has so far lost 4 968 citizens to COVID-19.

Tests and recoveries

South Africa has conducted 5 290 966 total tests, with 21 904 conducted in the last 24-hour cycle.

The private sector accounts for 58% (3 062 857) of total tests, while the public sector accounts for 42% (2 228 109).

The recovery rate remains at 92.5% as 710 099 people have recovered from the virus.
