S Africans pessimistic about jobs, economic growth prospects

Reading Time: < 1 minute

As 2017 is slowly coming to an end, South Africans are increasingly pessimistic about jobs and economic growth prospects in the country.

The current year-on-year growth of 0.8%, coupled with persistent high unemployment rate of 27.7% is taking its toll on the country’s population.

The SABC recently went to the streets and discussed what South Africans expect for the year ahead.

It’s been an extremely disappointing year for the local economy. Growth has stagnated, while the struggle for jobs continues unabated.

In the second quarter of the year, the country entered a recession as GDP fell by 0.7%, after the previous 0.3% contraction.

At the same time, rating agencies downgraded the country to almost junk status.

And some believe the worst is yet to come.

Others are pinning their hopes on the ascendency of Cyril Ramaphosa to the Union Buildings.

Ordinary citizens are not the only ones who lack faith in the country’s economic growth, also business confidence is at its lowest.

Investors are still looking for policy certainty.

On a more positive note, inflation remains contained at 4.6%, while the rand also remains resilient.
