Tannie Poppie returned home at the weekend and says her Roosterbrood was a hit.

The so called ‘Roosterbrood Queen’ of the Karoo, Tannie Poppie, says she stuck to her tried and tested methods of making her South African delicacy- even when she was in Italy.

The 63-year-old is known for selling her freshly made Roosterbrood along the N1 at Laingsburg in the Karoo.

She recently scored an invite to Italy to go and braai during a three-day cycling event in Gaiole.

She returned home at the weekend and says her Roosterbrood was a hit.

” I went and collected my own wood in Italy’s bushes. The people said there isn’t any wood, but there’s wood for the whole of Africa in Italy. We made fire and started to make our Roosterbrood and as the Italians came they stood in long queues waiting for my Roosterbrood.”
