World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont says he is looking forward to growing the game and taking it to another level.

The 68-year-old was speaking on Marawa Sport Worldwide on Metro FM & Radio 2000 on Monday evening.

He says sport officials are relying on governments around the world and experts to find the solution to the COVID-19 pandemic that has led to a halt in tournaments.

Beaumont was re-elected as World Rugby chairman at the weekend.

He beat Argentine Agustin Pichot in the first round of voting.

In the radio interview below, the 68-year-old vows to grow rugby globally:

Both veteran broadcaster Robert Marawa and former Springbok player Thando Manana, the author of  Being a Black Springbok: The Thando Manana Story, conducted the interview.

Call for unity

Following his re-election on Saturday, Beaumont called for unity amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Former England captain Beaumont won by a 28-23 margin to secure a second consecutive four-year term.

Frenchman Bernard Laporte, who was running unopposed, was elected vice-chairman.

“Now is not the time for celebration. We have work to do,” Beaumont said in a statement.

“We are tackling COVID-19 and must implement an appropriate return-to-rugby strategy that prioritises player welfare, while optimising any opportunity to return to international rugby this year in full collaboration with club competitions for the good of players, fans and the overall financial health of the sport.”
