Protesting Kimberley residents loot shops

The protesters accuse the CFO and Municipal Manager of flouting tender processes and trying to implement a controversial electricity tariff hike.

There has been sporadic looting of businesses and shops in Kimberley yet again.

The town has been brought to a standstill since Thursday.

This after protesters marched to the Sol Plaatje Municipal offices to demanding the resignation of the chief financial officer Lydia Mahloko and municipal manager Goolam Akhawaray.

They protesters accuse the two of flouting tender processes and trying to implement a controversial electricity tariff hike.

Police spokesperson Mashay Gamieldien says police are currently patrolling all the key areas.

“During the evening there was sporadic incidents of looting at businesses and shops in Roodepan, Galeshewe and Greenpoint. Police members are currently patrolling all the areas. The enforcements were called in to assist with the policing of protest action and incidents in greater Kimberley area.”

“Numerous arrests were effective since Friday, for public violence, business robbery, malicious damage to property and attempted murder. All suspects will be appearing in the Kimberley and Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court soon.”
