The Proteas are well placed to win their first home Test series against Australia in 48 years.

Leading the series 2-1, South Africa finished day three of the final test on 134 for three and now enjoy a lead of 401 with Australia still yet to bat their second innings after two subdued opening days of the final Test match.

Australia would have hoped to put up a fight when Tim Paine and Pat Cummings took to the crease on day three.

With overcast conditions and lights on at the Bullring, many would have thought it was only a matter of time before the Proteas ripped through Australia’s lower order.

However, the duo of Paine and Cummings had other ideas, offering some resistance for the embattled touring Australian side.

Keshav Maharaj struck to dismiss Cummins for 50 after a successful review just before the Lunch break.

Kagiso Rabada then dismissed Nathan Lyon with the fifth ball after lunch and that soon followed by the wicket Chadd Sayers an over later from the bowling of Mahraj.

Opener Dean Elgar produced a brilliant piece of fielding to end Australia’s first innings on 221 all out, still trailing South Africa by 267 runs.

South Africa’s reply got off to a solid start, the opening stand of Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram contributing more than 50 runs, before the latter was dismissed for 37.

Despite the wicket of Markram, at tea South Africa was still in a strong position to clinch the Test match on 58 for 1, enjoying a lead of 325.

The Proteas managed to add 76 runs in the final session having lost the wicket of Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers to end the day on 134 for three – enjoying a lead of 401 runs.
