Police called in bring North West community members to order at Taung Magistrate’s Court

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Police had to be called in to bring rowdy community members to order that were protesting at the Taung Magistrate’s Court in the North West on Wednesday.

The case against Rebaone Molekane and Tumelo Tlhonkoe has been postponed to December as their lawyer indicated to the court that they had abandoned their bail application.

The duo is accused of killing Tshepang Seelo of Modimong village three weeks ago.

Police had to use hand grenades to disperse residents of Modimong village who came in numbers to support the Seelo family.

Seelo was allegedly murdered three weeks ago when he was returning home at night with his partner. The residents were singing songs of liberation outside court as the two accused appeared briefly in court.

The case was postponed by the court due to a non-functioning court recorder and also to allow further investigation.

Community members say they are angry about what had happened.

“From here, what we are going to do since well our son has been killed, we are going to murder anyone who is involved with these murders,” threatened one of the residents.

“Justice must be done without any fight, but with common understanding. We do not want mob justice but the community is angry. Let the will be done and we should be satisfied by seeing those criminals rotting in jail,” says another resident.

Tshepang Seelo’s sister, Whitney, says the family wants justice to be done speedily.

“We are very sad because the magistrate has postponed the case. We are sad as family. All we want from the magistrate is for them to give those guys life sentences, otherwise, we have no other words to say.”

The suspects will remain in custody until their next court appearance in December.
