Panyaza Lesufi tests positive for COVID-19

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is in isolation and receiving treatment, after testing positive for COVID-19.

Lesufi started feeling unwell on Thursday night and tested for the virus on Friday morning. Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona is urging those who were in contact with the MEC in recent days to get tested, if they are feeling unwell.

“The Gauteng Education MEC Mr Panyaza Lesufi is in isolation and receiving treatment after having tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, 24 December 2021. MEC Lesufi felt unwell last night and struggled to breathe, which prompted him to go test for COVID-19 this morning and his results came back positive. We wish to advise people who had been in contact with MEC Lesufi prior to him testing positive for COVID-19 to either monitor themselves for any flu-like symptoms or go get tested accordingly.”

A total of 64,079 tests were conducted in the last 24hrs, with 18,847 new COVID-19 cases in South Africa, which represents a 29.4% positivity rate.

A further 81 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 90,743 to date.
