Nzimande interdicted from placing Unisa under administration

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has interdicted Higher Education Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, from placing the university under administration.

Nzimande was to announce his final decision today following reports of an Independent Assessor Professor Themba Mosia and the ministerial task team on Unisa chaired by Dr Vincent Maphai.

The report revealed financial and other maladministration of a serious nature and serious undermining of the effective functioning of Unisa.
Approximately a month ago, Nzimande issued a stern ultimatum to the Unisa council, giving them seven days to provide a compelling explanation for why the university should not be subjected to administration. This ultimatum came as a response to growing concerns and revelations about the university’s alleged misconduct.

However, despite the minister’s ultimatum, it appears that no substantial progress or resolution has been achieved in the past month. This has led Nzimande to move forward with his decision, which will be disclosed to the public today.
