More than 8 million vaccines have been administered in SA

The Health Ministry says more than 8.18 million vaccines have now been administered in South Africa. Around 200 000 vaccines were administered in the last 24 hour reporting period.

The government is hoping to vaccinate 300 000 people per day very soon.

The Ministry says more than 3.3 million people are now fully vaccinated having received either one dose of the single-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine or two doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

Meanwhile, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases has released the latest coronavirus data revealing that almost 60 000 tests were conducted in the last 24 hour reporting period and that over 13 000 people tested positive.

The Western Cape accounts for 27% of new cases followed by Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The NICD says the test positivity rate increased slightly over the last 24 hour period to 22.3 %.

It says 423 people died from COVID-19 realted illnesses, taking the overall death toll to 73 415.
