KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda has commended the police for the way in which they handled violent protest in Mooi River in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.

More than 50 people have been arrested following the protest in which over 20 trucks were looted and torched on the N-3 Sunday night.

Kaunda has described the protest as a criminal act. Kaunda’s department has cited truck drivers’ grievances over the employment of foreign nationals as the cause of the protest which has forced the total closure of the N-3 freeway.

Kaunda says police have acted impressively.

“We are happy that the police have acted. I’m about the meet with the law enforcement agencies to get the full report and from there we’ll develop a plan, which will be sustainable. I have just met with the drivers, those who were saved from this situation. They raised their concerns and have shared with me their experiences.”
