The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) in Cape Town has accepted the apology of the Pick ‘n Pay store in Tokai after allegations of violations of Halaal standards at its store.

The apology comes after images went viral on social media showing Halaal poultry and yoghurt packed in a general freezer together with pork.

According to the retailer’s management the Halaal poultry were removed by a new employee to the general freezer at the request of an electrician who was doing maintenance work on the fridges.

Pick n Pay Management says the Halaal poultry was removed from the freezer after a external electrician employed to fix the freezers asked the Pick n Pay staffer to do so.

Pick n Pay’s Western Cape general Manager, Jarred Van Vuuren has since apologised for the mistake and says the company has wrote it off as a financial loss.

He says management acted swiftly by securing and wrapping the Halaal products and removing it from its premises immediately.

Van Vuuren says to ensure such mistakes do not happen again, all Pick n Pay staff will be re-educated on how to handle Halaal products.

He says new employees will also receive the necessary training.
