Van Lingen served as executive mayor of the DA lead council since 2016.

The mayor of the Kouga municipality in the Eastern Cape, Elza van Lingen, has passed away after a long battle with cancer. She was 68 years old.

Van Lingen served as executive mayor of the DA led council since 2016.

The municipality includes towns like Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp.

Kouga speaker Horatio Hendricks says she had a long history in politics.

“She served on the NCOP since 2009, and before that she was a councillor on the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.”

“I have called an urgent council meeting for tomorrow 1pm where we will decide on the acting position as mayor. That is a council designated position, and then the DA’s procedures will kick in.”

The memorial service for the former mayor will take place on Monday, April 23 at 2pm Mentors Country Estate.
