Reading Time: 2 minutes

Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) says the statement made by the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Sylvia Lucas on load shedding is unfortunate and an insult to the people of this country.

Speaking during the debate on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Tuesday, Lucas said load shedding is not the end of the world.

Contralesa President, Kgosi Lameck Mokoena says Lucas must retract her statement.

Mokoena says, “Contralesa is shocked and disappointed at the utterances by the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Hon Sylvia Lucas, the former premier of the Northern Cape, who said our people must understand and be ok because we are from that past where she was also part of those who carried water using buckets and who use candles.”

“It is an insult to our people because we cannot really justify what is happening now. We understand those who are saying our government is trying so hard to correct the balances of the past not what was said by Hon Lucas. We call upon the ANC to reprimand her and she must retract those unfortunate words.”
