The Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that the first voter registration weekend will take place on the 18th and 19th of November, with 26.2 million registered voters, comprising 14.4 million women and 11.6 million men.
The IEC is launching its National and Provincial Elections (NPE) 2024 campaign at Gallagher Estate, Midrand in Gauteng on Tuesday.
Giving the keynote address, IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moeypa says the countdown to the 2024 National and Provincial elections has begun.
He says with independent candidates participating in polls for the first time, patience must be exercised regarding necessary legislative adjustments and effort must be made to educate citizens.
“Almost everyone we have come across has expressed the view that the 2025 national and provincial elections will be a complex undertaking we do not hold a different view. From now henceforth the commission will continue to strengthen civic and voter education initiatives to make sure that votes are fully informed about their roles and responsibilities in the upcoming elections this is important because an informed electorate is the bedrock of a thriving democracy”
The campaign will conscientise South Africans about the requirements to register and to vote as well as the high-level timelines for the election.
