Lesotho Election Observers raise concerns

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Election Observers in Lesotho have raised concern over the overlapping roles between the army and the police.

This after the Lesotho Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) expressed shock that the army had been deployed at polling stations on Saturday and contrary to earlier undertakings, that the army would only transport voting materials to hard to reach areas.

Southern African Development Community (SADC) Head of Mission – Tanzanian Foreign Minister Dr Augustine Mahiga says, “It is recommended that section five of the Lesotho Defence Force Act be reviewed to ensure clear separation of power and responsibility, to ensure accountability to the civilian government.”
