Judge Makhubele appears before Judicial Conduct Tribunal

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Suspended judge, Nana Makhubele, is finally appearing before the Judicial Conduct Tribunal in Rosebank, Johannesburg, in the misconduct investigation. This comes after civil society organisation #UniteBehind lodged a formal complaint against her in 2019.

The organisation alleged that Makhubele violated the separation of powers principle by being a judge and chairperson of the state-owned company, PRASA.

After numerous delays, Judge Makhubele has finally taken the stand in the formal hearing probing her alleged misconduct.

The matter was supposed to be heard on Monday, however, her legal counsel requested a postponement, saying they needed time to prepare. This is despite a previous postponement in November 2023.

The matter proceeded on Wednesday before suffering yet another delay after the Judge requested time to peruse through the records of evidence previously submitted before the Tribunal.

She has begun her testimony by forewarning her intention to deny allegations through witness statements before the tribunal, denying that she received calls from Gauteng High Court Judge President, Dustan Mlambo to take her oath as a Judge. She has volunteered to hand over her cellphone as part of evidence.
