Journalists a target for state spying- R2K

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Right To Know Campaign  (R2K) has released a report titled SPOOKED, on surveillance of journalists in South Africa. R2K has revealed that surveillance in the country affects all members of society. According to the report, journalists in particular seem to be the target for state spying, and more recently, even private-sector spying.

This seems to be especially true for journalists who have uncovered corruption, state capture, and abuse of power in agencies such as the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the State Security Agency (SSA), the Crime Intelligence division of the police, and the Hawks.

R2K’s Secrecy and Securitization Organiser Murray Hunter was on Morning Live.
