IEC weighs in on two centres of power debate

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Independent Electoral Commission ( IEC)  has commented on growing calls that the Electoral Act must be amended to avoid, the situation in which there is two centres of power between the sitting state president and the party president in charge.

Calls have been advocated by North West ANC Chairperson and Premier Supra Mahumapelom, that the terms of sitting party presidents must run concurrently with that of the president of the state.

These calls come as there is discussion regarding the future of State President Jacob Zuma.

“The debate is taking place, so it is possible we can have a hybrid model. Whatever system we adopt in the country, it would be easy to implement. It is easy to change the electoral system but is not the electoral acts we need to change; it is the constitution that needs to be changed because that is where the electoral act is embedded. It’s the prerogative of Parliament who will decide what is good of the country,” said the IEC’s Terry Tselane while speaking at an electoral lecture in Rustenburg.
