The IEC has called on South Africa’s over 26-million eligible voters to register to vote ahead of the 2024 elections.

Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo made the call at the launch of the Electoral Commission’s Communication campaign in Midrand Johannesburg.

Mamabolo says that one-million people have so-far registered on the IEC’s online portal – just over 400 000 of these being new registrations and the rest re-registrations. He says that citizens must take advantage of the national registration weekends that the IEC has planned.

Mamabolo says that the Electoral Commission is in consultation with President Cyril Ramaphosa as to the date of the general elections.

“Registration weekends remain a modality that afford most of our citzens access to the electoral process. It is the proverbial equaliser of access to the electoral process. Two such opportunities are planned ahead of the impending elections in 2024. The first of these takes place on the 18th and 19th of November, the date of the second is the subject of consideration by the commission.”
