I will not vote for those who have tormented me: Mugabe

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe says former defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi should have succeeded him.

He was addressing the media outside his home in the capital, Harare.

The media briefing takes place on the eve of historic elections on Monday.

It’s Zimbabwe’s first election since Mugabe was forced to resign last November, after 37 years in power.

Incumbent President, Emmerson Mnangagwa – who is Mugabe’s former ally in the ruling ZANU-PF party – faces opposition leader Nelson Chamisa of the MDC in Monday’s polls.

Mugabe says he had planned to resign at the ZANU-PF congress in December last year.

“Let the people go and vote. Let them go and vote freely. We have had now a long list of aspirants – 23 is the number of aspirants. I must say very clearly, I can’t vote for those who have tormented me. No. I will make my choice among the other 22,” adds Mugabe.

Meanwhile, MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa will also address the media in Harare later.

Thousands of Zimbabweans based in South Africa and other neighbouring countries have made their way back home to cast their ballots in Monday’s election.

Police have assured all citizens that they are ready for any eventualities during the national elections.

They say more than 70-thousand officers will be deployed to areas across the country. – – Additional reporting by Reuters
