Former SABC board chair Eddie Funde dies

Former South African Ambassador to Germany and SABC chairperson, Sonwabo Eddie Funde has passed away.

In a statement by the family, Funde died after a cardiac arrest early Tuesday morning.

Prior to the advent of democracy in South Africa, Mr Funde joined the ANC underground. He was in exile when the organisation was banned.

He served in various portfolios within the organisation. These include among others Chief Representative Australasia and Pacific, 1983 – 1991.

After the triumph of democracy in South Africa in 1994, he served in various public and private agencies in an executive and non-executive capacity.

He founded and directed a number of other private companies in the ICT industry between 2000 and 2008.

He also served as Deputy Chairman of the Presidential National Commission on Information Society and Development and as SABC board Chair.
