Police are investigating the possibility that rivalry between cable theft gangs led to the murder of five people in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg.

Their bodies were discovered by a passerby this morning. Police noted the bodies were found alongside a dugout where the cables had been stripped. The identities of the victims are not yet known. Police spokesperson Dimakatso Sello is appealing for information from the public.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown at this stage as police investigations continue. Police request anyone who may have information that can assist with the investigation to please contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop Line on  08600 10111 alternatively anonymous tip-offs can be left on MySapsApp. All information received will be treated as strictly confidential,” says  Sello.

Police investigating following discovery of five bodies near Eldorado Park:

The issue of cable theft is a huge concern in South Africa.

There’s a need for law enforcement agencies to collaborate, especially in countries where stolen cables are sourced from South Africa. This is according to experts who say all players should be targeted as the crime is trans-national and involves a highly structured network.

Essential services provided by among others, Eskom and Transnet are disrupted while the looted cables are reportedly exported to countries such as China and India.
