Evacuation of South African citizens from Sudan under way

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The International Relations Department has confirmed that its evacuation of South African citizens from Sudan is under way. The department’s spokesperson Clayson Monyela says 77 citizens, including embassy staff, are on their way to Khartoum.

South Africa is among the many countries that are racing against time to evacuate their citizens from Sudan. They are taking advantage of the apparent lull today in fierce fighting between the army and a paramilitary force.

The sudden eruption of violence between the military and the well-armed Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group earlier this month has triggered a humanitarian crisis.

420 people have been killed and millions others left without access to basic services and are trapped in their homes.
