Eskom says two of its workers, Sarah Sibiya and Bhekizizwe Twala, who are employed at the Tutuka Power Station, have appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on fraud, corruption and theft charges.

The two were released on bail of  R5000each.

Eskom says a supplier, Jessie Kubeka, has now also been arrested in connection with the fuel oil syndicate. Eskom says the trio were charged in connection with hundreds of millions of rands paid by the power utility for goods and services that were not delivered.

Four other suspects are expected to appear in court next week.

The trial has been set down for the 21st of February next year.

Load shedding

Meanwhile, economists have again expressed concern about the effect of load shedding on the South African economy.

Each stage of load shedding is estimated to cost the local economy around a billion rand per day.

South Africans are facing yet another weekend of load shedding.

Eskom says the load shedding will last until 5am on Monday morning.

The power utility says a number of generating units at Tutuka, Kendal and Matimba have gone down.
