EFF criticises removal of Mangaung Metro speaker

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Free State has voiced its criticism of the recent motion of no confidence in Mangaung Metro speaker Maryke Davies.

The party has labelled the motion as frivolous and raised concerns about the proceedings.

According to the EFF, an African National Congress (ANC) councillor who presided over the motion appeared to make a mockery of the proceedings. Ultimately, Davies was voted out of her position following a walkout by the Democratic Alliance (DA).

In the wake of her removal, the ANC’s Lawrence Mathae assumed the role of speaker for the Free State’s only metro.

Gopolang Lipale, the EFF’s Mangaung chairperson, expressed dissatisfaction with the situation. He suggested that if the DA believed they had a legal basis for their objections, they should take the matter to court.

Lipale also commented on Mathae’s appointment as the new speaker, stating that he had achieved his long-standing ambition of holding this position.

He further added that the EFF hoped the people of Mangaung would recognise the implications of the ANC’s actions on the municipality.
