The sports event usually takes place early in July but the COVID-19 pandemic has placed challenges which have caused the delay.

The Vodacom Durban July will take place at Greyville on Saturday, with no crowds and little fanfare.

There may be no fashion to speak of, but there is a strong field for the race. Trainer Justin Snaith has five horses in the 18-horse field and Belgarion is the one attracting the most attention and betting .

“We are under no illusion that Rainbow Bridge and Do It Again are better horses at weight for age, we know that. But 53 kilos it’s a different story. Seven kilos over 2200, that’s what they’ve got to give away. And that’s what brings him into the race. Between him and Bunker Hunt, the weight is the big thing,” says Snaith.

Durban streets are usually bustling when the event takes place with the country’s top celebrities geared to make fashion statement. The coastal city will be less lively this year as the country is under lockdown to help curb the spread of coronavirus.
