Lobby group Section 27 which is representing the families of the deceased patients, welcomed the possible extension of the inquest.

Former Managing Director of the Life Esidimeni Group, Dr Morgan Mkhatshwa will continue to testify before the inquest that is underway in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.

He will share insight into the deaths of 144 mentally-ill patients during his tenure at Life Esidimeni Centre.

On Tuesday, Mkhatshwa told the inquest that he did not support the decision by the former Gauteng Health MEC, Qedani Mahlangu to transfer patients to other facilities.

Most of the patients later died due to starvation and negligence.

Mkhatshwa was cross-examined by advocate Russel Sibara, legal representative of former Gauteng’s Health Director, Dr Makgabo Manamela.
