A 13-year-old learner was stabbed to death near the gate of the Kegomoditswe primary school in Hertzogville in the Free State on Friday.

Some disgruntled parents are still queuing outside the Education department offices in Polokwane, Limpopo, seeking placements for their children at schools ahead of the new academic year.

One of the parents, Farrai Chabalala, says his child has not been admitted yet. Chabalala says he has applied at two different high schools in Polokwane.

“June they send us some communications that we must apply online, we have done that we chose three schools I chose Capricorn High and Taxilla, this year when I went back to Capricorn High they say they are not accepting any kid we are very much confused as parents we are really confused and that is why I am here to meet with some officials of the department, I am still on the queue,” says Farrai Chabalala.

Limpopo’s Education department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene says they have advised district managers to use the manual system to admit the learners.

“We still have learners, especially in urban areas, who are not yet placed in our schools for admissions. These are areas such as Lephalale, Phalaborwa and Polokwane and these applications to schools that are oversubscribed or schools of choice that were full. In some instances, parents are making late applications due to the number of reasons circuit managers have been advised to offer admissions manually were available and all this is work in progress,” says Tidimalo Chuene.
